Natural Way To De-Worm Goats

Many people use Shaklee Classic Basic H (including us) as a natural way to de-worm their livestock - we currently use it for our cows, Nigerian dwarf dairy goats and LGD.

Here is what is recommended for worming -
1. Measure out Classic Basic H for the animal you are trying help eliminate worms. For cows, use 1 cup per 100 gallons of water or 1/8 cup per 20 gallons of water. For smaller animals like goats and sheep the dosage needs to be smaller. Measure out 6cc. or use 2 drops per 10# of animal weight. Some people do this for 3-7 days, others do it as a one time only treatment.
2. Mix the Classic Basic H with water. For large animals the cleaner can be added to the water trough. For smaller animals, mix the 6 cc with 8 oz. water. Place the mixture in a turkey baster and give to the animal.
(We use 2 drops per 10# of animal weight.) For example: A 40 lb. goat would get 8 drops of Classic Basic H added to the drinking water once every 4 months.
Note: at first some of the animals don't want to drink the water, but that is the only water offered till gone - they catch on pretty fast! Right now, I worm my animals every 4 months (3 times a year) with Shaklee Classic Basic H. I'm sure there are a lot of variations on that.
Basic H is a green cleaner made by Shaklee, and has been on the market for over 40 years. There are over 1001 uses for Basic H (Find some of them here!)
According to Joel Salatin who wrote the book "Salad Bar Beef" Classic Basic H can be used to control worms in all livestock animals. You can purchase the book "Salad Bar Beef" by Joel Salatin from Amazon here!

You can also find info for using Shaklee Basic H for Agriculture Use here.
 ---------------------------------
The Classic Basic H is different than Basic H2 - Here is some info on that:
Shaklee Basic H was the original formula, now known as Classic Basic H. Over the years, customers and Shaklee Distributors have found many different uses for Basic H that is not consistent with the labeling of the product. Shaklee Basic H was meant to be used as a non-toxic household cleaner. It was soon discovered that the original Basic H was purchased for many other uses! (Shaklee does not endorse these uses because testing was not done in regards to uses other than cleaning and household uses).
Shaklee learned that Classic Basic H was being purchased by farmers and ranchers as a great way to control horse flies, worm cattle, control crop pests and many other uses. Classic Basic H turned out to be a great all natural alternative to farmers. The home gardener started to realize that Basic H helped with greener grass, healthier plants, sunburn, mosquito control, ant killer, car wash and so much more! Again, the Shaklee Corporation does not endorse the product for such uses but customers will always tell you it is amazing.
Several years ago Shaklee wanted to get the "Green Seal" of approval for Shaklee Basic H and they had to reformulate it. This is when Shaklee Basic H2 was born. Shaklee Basic H2 is more concentrated, if that is even possible, and it is mainly used for cleaning purposes. Some people have used Basic H2 for a fly spray, mosquito spray and some of the other uses discovered for the Original Classic Basic H. If you are a farmer, rancher or use Basic H for purposes not listed on the label it is highly recommended that you use the Classic Basic H. Basic H and Basic H2 are very similar and work equally well for its labeled purposes.
As of now, Shaklee only produces the classic Basic H in a 5 or 30 gallon drum - you can see more at our website here!

Some people that still desire the original Classic Basic H will purchase a 5 Gallon supply and split it with other Basic H lovers to help reduce the cost.

We also use Shaklee performance in our chicken waters when they are peeps - It gives them electrolytes that they need and we have never had a chick - not even our meet birds die on us yet. My Grandpa raised meat birds to sell and did the same thing!

We  wash all our buildings, pens, water and feed buckets down with Shaklee Basic H and Shaklee Basic G to disinfect them! You can read more about Basic G here or visit our website to order.

*Please note that I am not a doctor or vet and cannot gaurentee any outcome or recommend what dosage would work best in your circumstance – use your own judgment.

Please note: if you are already a Shaklee customer, or have previously purchased basic h through someone else, please contact your Distributor for more info.

When you purchase Basic H Classic through me at www.srkindred.com - I will email you a brochure with more info and basic h ratios after you purchase it.

Please don't purchase through someone else and then ask me your questions or want me to send you info... that takes time away from my family and my own customers....

I will no longer send a brochure out with more info until after you purchase through our website. I am happy to help and do try to take care of my customers. Thank-you!

  1. Your group of critters - cow, goats, and dog - are adorable. I only have dogs, but hope to soon "expand" to some farm animals.

Thanks for the informative post on de-worming, and the link-up [and for using my blog hop image :)].

  2. I'll admit I'm a bit skeptical about using Basic-H for worming. Have you done before & after fecal testing?
    Thanks! I am truly interested!

  4. Jeanette, I personally did not do testing before using Basic H, as that is what I started my goats with and have always used it -but I have done testing since and they are clean. I know with our dog - he had worms when we got him, (he was vet tested before and after), but after a few days of basic h in his water -he was worm free.
I do know of quite a few people who use basic h for worming with great results.

  6. you are more than welcome Jeanette..... just make sure to use the classic Basic H formula (not the new Basic H2). The classic H is blueish-green in color.

  7. I just read this- it is from Shaklee regarding Basic-H and using on animals. I was really thinking about buying the 5 gallons. Now....I'm a little scared.
After reading this what are your feelings about using it on and as a deworming?

    Basic-H® Concentrated Organic Cleaner
Introduced in 1960, Basic-H was one of the first, general-purpose biodegradable cleaners. Since then, no other cleaner has offered as
much versatility. It provides concentrated cleaning that’s suitable for a variety of household cleaning needs—even the toughest jobs.
Yet, Basic-H delivers safe, efficient cleaning power without contributing to environmental pollution.
Basic-H offers unique performance advantages over many types of cleaners, from porcelain, ceramic, and tile cleaners, to car wash
soaps. It also works on delicate washables, dishes, and on surfaces such as windows and mirrors.
Guidelines for Getting the Most from Basic-H®
Just one teaspoon of Basic-H in a quart of warm water makes a powerful solution safe for cleaning most household surfaces that
are also safe when exposed to water. Basic-H may require rinsing when used on floors, especially important to prevent accelerated
soiling in high traffic areas. Never use Basic-H on carpets, as it removes carpet’s protective coating, which could accelerate soiling
    and fading from sunlight.
CAUTION: Some plastics may be sensitive to the cleaning agents in Basic-H. Do not use Basic-H on plastic or fiberglass without
contacting the manufacturer for compatibility with cleaners with linear alcohol ethoxylates.
Although Basic-H is U.S.D.A.-approved for hand washing, Shaklee does not recommend the product for
personal care. An eye irritant, Basic-H should not be used to clean contact lenses, plastic-forward lenses,
    or plastic-glass frames.
Because of risk of irritation, particularly among young females, Basic-H should not be used as
a bath additive in any amount, even when diluted. Bath additives require special testing, which
has not been conducted on Basic-H. Basic-H should not be used as a general shampoo or
    dandruff shampoo.
Do not mix Basic-H with Basic-G® Germicidal Cleaner. The water wetting agents in Basic-H
inactivate the germ-killing agents in Basic-G.
Basic-H must not be used on companion or farm animals, or added to any animal feed. It is not a
food additive and is not for internal consumption. Do not use Basic-H for treating burns or skin
injuries. It is not a legally registered insect repellant, yard spray, or soil adjuvant. Do not use to
clean aquariums, as the residue from Basic-H can make tank water “too wet”, causing fish to drown.
Basic-H is one of the most popular products that Shaklee offers. This safe, high-performing
biodegradable cleaner should be your first choice if you’re looking for a replacement to many
common household cleaners that contain harsh ingredients such as chlorine, ammonia, or other solvents.
Give your home a healthy cleaning with Basic-H.

    1. As stated above we recommend only using Shaklee Basic H Classic for deworming livestock. Classic Basic H is different than Basic H2. Many people use the Classic Basic H for livestock with great results (including me). There is also a booklet called "Shakleeizing Your Farm" that tells of the correct amounts of classic Basic H to use for farming. http://srkindred.myshaklee.com/us/en/products.php?sku=00042
For legal purposes Shaklee Corperation is required to say that they only recommend it for what it was made for which is cleaning - and in the same way, as stated above, I must disclose that I am not a vet and cannot guarantee any outcome or recommend what dosage would work best in your circumstance – use your own judgment. that being said you may like to check out the post 1001 ways to use Basic H here: http://srkindredspirits.blogspot.com/2011/10/shaklee-basic-h-1001-uses.html
      I hope that helps.

  8. To the anonymous poster, Shaklee doesn't test their products on animals so they are required by law to say that. I wouldn't worry, it has been used for years and we use it on our farm too!

  9. Thanks for info! Boy, the goat worm fight! Help! However with 21 goats, I need a formula dosage I can use in their 33 gallon tanks and a 150 gallon tank. Do you have a dosage I can add to these water tanks so I don't have to do each animal individually? Thanks.

    1. Hi Connie. I don't know for sure on a large number of goats. It also would depend on their size. I only have dwarf goats. Joel Salatin recommends 1 cup per 100 gallons of water or 1/8 cup per 20 gallons of water for cows, so I'd probably do some math and figure up the percentage of goats weight in relation to a cows weight to find a rough estimate. I know that isn't the precise answer that you're looking for, but that's what I would do.

  10. Note: When beginning this program, I used Basic H in the water daily for the first month because we had a SEVERE worm problem. No ill effects. Following is the program I use now.

Dosage: 1 Tablespoon Shaklee Basic H Classic per 5 gallons water.
Schedule: 1 week treated water, 3 weeks untreated water. Start on Sunday. Mark the schedule on your calendar for the entire year.

No access to untreated water during treatment week. Treat any water pails in barn, also.

I have done this for the past 10 months. All fecals have been clear. I am using less feed, and my goats, all sizes and ages, are healthier and more robust than ever before. I have not used a chemical wormer since beginning, and my feed bill has reduced significantly. Parasites are expensive to feed!

    2. This note should be added to my previous comment:
In 2021, we had a terribly wet spring. Had I been checking eye membranes weekly, I would have realized that worms were becoming an issue with my goats due to the fact that animals drink far less during periods when grasses and forage are wet, thus they were getting an inadequate amount of treated water during this time. Therefore, my goats were overwhelmed by worms before I knew it. Lesson learned:
Basic H can be a great dewormer when added to drinking water as outlined above, PROVIDED that you check membranes each week for possible unforseen changes, just as you should with any worming program.
      Final analysis:
Basic H is a very effective wormer when used as directed (1 cup per 100 gal water tank-you do the math for your own tank size, 7 days each month) provided you continue to monitor famacha score (redness of lower eye membrane) each week and intervene with chemical wormers if needed.
