Getting Healthy - Part 2

Continued from Getting Healthy - Part 1....

..... So, last year, hubby and I really started searching for options. We knew that to make a lifestyle change as big as I needed - I would need the best tools to help me succeed. In October 2016, I attended a health seminar and started meeting with a dietitian monthly.

Over the next few months, I continued meeting with my dietitian, but with Thanksgiving and Christmas we didn't do awholelotta changing. I did manage to lose 10 lb. through - the monthly visits with the dietitian helped to keep me accountable. We decided to start 2017 out fresh with a lifestyle change, not just for me but for our whole family!

Well, that was the plan.... life had other ideas.

You see, I have multiple autoimmune disorders. The last couple months I had been seeing a different specialist for other ongoing health problems. That Doctor set a surgery date for March. The surgery, although it was out patient, set me back quite a bit.

During this time, I had lots of testing done regarding other health issues and another doctor set yet another surgery date for May. My plan was altered. I was still seeing my dietitian and during that time lost another 10 lbs. But was kinda in limbo waiting for the next surgery, which would be a big one.

The day before my scheduled surgery - it was cancelled - partly because of a paper work mix up and partly because of another auto immune disease that they found in my pre-opt testing blood work. They wanted me to see yet another specialist and more testing before they would go through with my scheduled surgery.....  this actually turned into a blessing, because 3 days later, my son was emitted to the hospital for emergency brain surgery.... He was in the hospital for 5 weeks.... and home with transfusions for another 3 weeks.

During that time, I saw a new specialist and another doctor who (although I do have yet another auto immune disease), she signed off on me going ahead with my original surgery....

My surgery was on August 2nd. I was in the hospital for 4 days - ended up having complications and a second emergency surgery 12 hours after the first one, on a liquid diet and didn't have strength to exercise, so I just mainly walked.

The surgery was hard, both mentally and physically, and it did set my lifestyle change back by about 8 extra months, but it was actually a blessing. As a result, I lost another 20#'s and also started eating healthier!

The best part about having the last major surgery was that it was a success and many of my health problems are no longer a problem!

So, in August, I really hit my lifestyle change hard!

The main changes have been:

  • Portion control - instead of eating 5 cookies, I eat and enjoy one and no more.
  • Eating high protein foods first. I supplement with Shaklee protein when I need extra.
  • Eating low-carb. I still eat carbs - I just try to be aware of how many I eat.
  • Taking high quality whole food supplements - believe me, I've done the research, there is nothing better out there with the science to back it up! I've taken Shaklee supplements off and on for over 7 years. But I now am consistent with taking my food supplements and have noticed a big difference.
  •  I do regular activities with my hubby and kids - like riding bike, playing 4 square, and walks.
  • And I continue seeing my dietitian...not as much as I did previously, but it helps keep me accountable, and she helps me find ways to change my negative eating habits into healthy ones.
Since I started seeing my dietitian and consistently taking my Shaklee, eating a high protein diet and exercising, I have lost a total of 54 lbs since October 2016. I started at 240 lb. and a size 22/24, and a BMI of 45.9. I am now 186 lbs. and wear a size 16/18.

I've still got a long way to go - but with Gods help, this is a lifestyle journey that I want to continue... not just for me but for my family as well.
My goal is not to be skinny or to be a certain size. My goal is to be healthy, happy!

To be continued......

Note: We have chosen NOT to discuss or to explain my surgeries with anyone, as in the past, discussing my health has caused unnecessary drama. I, Rhoda do suffer from multiple auto-immune disorders, cancer, and chronic stress. The doctor said without this surgery, I would only have a 3% chance at going on to live a healthier life style, so for me and my family's sake, this has been the right thing to do. We will not apologize for not explaining!

Best Protein Snack Recipe

Is your family getting all the protein that they need? If they are like the majority of Americans, they most likely aren't! My kids don't enjoy drinking protein shakes..... but they LOVE this Protein Snack! Even adults can't resist!

~ Recipe ~

1 cup (dry) oatmeal or crispy rice cereal

1/2 cup Chocolate or Vanilla Shaklee Life Energizing Protein

1/2 cup mini chocolate chips

1/2 cup peanut/almond butter

1/2 cup honey

(You can also add other ingredients like flax seed, chia seed, raisins, nuts, etc.)

Stir until everything is moist. Press into 8×8 pan or roll into bite sized balls. Keep in the refrigerator. Enjoy!

Around the world, millions of people don’t get enough protein. Protein malnutrition leads to the condition known as kwashiorkor. Lack of protein can cause growth failure, loss of muscle mass, decreased immunity, weakening of the heart and respiratory system, and death.

Protein is the single most important food we eat. The name comes form the Greek “protos,” meaning “first place” or “takes first place.” Every cell in our body contains and needs protein to survive!

All Protein Isn't Alike!

The quality of protein is measured by the balance and amounts of the essential amino acids it contains. If the protein contains all nine essential amino acids in proper amounts to support your body’s health, it is called a complete protein.

Not only does Shaklee’s Protein Powder have all nine essential amino acids in the proper amount and is a complete protein, but Shaklee products also go through rigorous safety tests, to insure you are getting the highest quality protein available! Order your Shaklee Protein here!

Getting Healthy - Part 1

It's no secret that I have struggled with my weight most of my life. I remember after getting my 8/9 yr old pictures taken - I was handing them out to my friends and I remember feeling ashamed that I was 'fat'. It was the first time I realized that I didn't have a waist... of course it didn't help that my best friend Carla, was beautiful, thin, and all the guys liked her!

As a teen, I wasn't huge, but I wore a size 10/12 (the same as my aunt) all through my teens. I weighed around 125#. The time I weighed the least was when I was 17 years old and two months pregnant with baby #1, (morning sickness and plain poverty does that to you) I weighed 110# and fit into a size 6. *Note: I am 5ft. 1in. tall.

After baby #1 was born, I kept gaining weight until I was at 160# (size 14) despite the fact that I walked everywhere I went and ate very little. Three years later, I was seeing a dietitian and was back down to 129# and a size 10.

I gradually started gaining the weight back and after baby #2 was born seven years later, I was 195#. I remember thinking how in the world do I keep gaining so much weight while I'm nursing and lugging around a 30# baby who ate all day long! (He was a big guy!) My medical doctor decided to intervene and a year later I was down to 170# and a size 16 - just in time for my little brothers wedding (I'm the blonde in the black dress in front)!

I kept the weight off until I was pregnant with baby #3 who put me up to 206# two years later.
I was beginning to see a pattern..... these babies were making me fat! .....hey, I gotta blame it on someone, right?!?!?!

Over the next six years, I tried:

  • The Curves Complete Program for 6 months (I was exercising 3 times a week, was on a meal plan, and I lost 10#).
  • My medical doctor put me on prescription diet pills, which made me go crazy and depressed.
  • It Works Wraps (stay far away - it does NOT work and caused a horrible rash and they do not refund you or try to make things right).
  • Multiple over the counter weight loss supplements such as, Caldoxin, Green Tea Extract, Vinegar capsules, Ali, etc. (none worked, not even a little).
  • Shaklee 180 for 3 months and lost 25#, and kept it off for one year. (Shaklee actually did work for me, but after 3 months, I got tired of taking a protein shake everyday.... I am so not a long term commitment kind of person.... so I stopped.
After trying 'everything' but nothing really helping long term, my weight reached the highest it's ever been. I was 240# and a size 18/20 shirts and 22/24 skirts/pants!

Family Vacation Jekyll Island, GA 2017

I was feeling miserable - life is not easy when doing a normal task like washing dishes; or tying your shoes makes you get out of breath.

Here's the funny thing.... I always knew I was overweight, the last few years I even thought I may be obese, but I tried to hide it behind a smile, new clothes, some make up and jewelry. Besides, I take high quality whole food supplements, and am quite healthy according to my blood work. I haven't been sick in years.

One day I decided to figure up my BMI and I was shocked with the results! I decided to go see a dietitian. What stung was when she looked me in the eye and told me that I was morbidly obese. Not just morbidly obese, but Morbidly Obese Class 3I had a better chance of dying from being fat than any other one thing!

It all had to change.... not just for awhile, but for good..... my lifestyle, what I eat, how I exercise, what I think - It had to change and it had to change once and for all......

To be continued....

Why I Don't Sell....

"I don't sell product - I share an opportunity. An opportunity to change ones life - to become healthier, to become wealthier, and to become a better person."
-Rhoda Kindred

I am not a salesman - I'm not really that fond of them to be honest. I find most salesmen to be pushy. Even after you say no - they continue to push, and push, never knowing when to stop.

I enjoy sharing Shaklee with people. I can ask someone if they'd be interested in taking a look at what I have to offer.
  • If they say "yes", I'm excited because that person is choosing to be open to an opportunity.
  • If they say "no", I'm okay with that. I am sad that they are shutting the door on something that could change their life for the better, but I respect them for not wasting my time.
  • It's the people that say maybe.... not now, or in six months. Then in another six months, they say maybe next year... Those people are the hardest to share with because you want to believe that they are telling you the truth and that they really are interested. But more often than not, they are just dragging you along, they don't want to hurt your feelings... or they think you'll forget them in six months. If that's you, please just tell us "no". Be honest.

My most favorite way to share is by listening. Try it. Most people just want someone to listen to them. And by listening, I can find out lots about a person. maybe they hate their job, need extra cash, are tired all the time, they have no energy, they need a new car, their kids are always sick, they have asthma, allergies, etc. If I listen to them, they will listen to me because I have something that will help them with any one of the scenarios they tell me.

And the best thing about Shaklee is that when you share it with others - It always works! They will feel a difference, and then they will share it with others, and the cycle continues. Your one share can change hundreds of lives!

"It is normal and right to recommend (share) things that you like or enjoy, like a good movie or a good restaurant. You are calling your close friends, relatives and neighbors to recommend (share) something that you feel is a good deal and they should know about. Whether they choose to take advantage of your recommendation is up to them, not up to you. All you can do is make the offer." - MJDurkin

Sharing comes natural - That my friend, is why I don't sell - I share the Shaklee lifestyle!

"The more you share, the more valuable your share becomes." - Dr. Shaklee

How To Turn An Old Chicken Coop Into A She Shed

We moved the chickens to the barn and turned an old chicken coop into a 'She Shed'.

Our oldest daughter, Faith (15 yrs.) shares a small bedroom with her 6 yr. old little sister. There's not a lot of room, and with their nine year age difference, they don't have a lot in common. So, I thought we'd make a 'She Shed' for Faith to use as her own art studio... a place to get away, a place to relax, a place to breath.

We took out the nest boxes, roosts, and all things chicken related, gave the whole thing a good scrub with Shaklee Basic H2 and Basic G to disinfect it, and let it dry.

Then we mixed up The Prairie Homestead's Whitewash (we added 1 bottle of purple rite dye to tint it), and the kids and I got busy painting it on. We didn't quite have enough to do the floor, so left it original. I was planning on painting it white, but never got that done. (story of my life...)

It really brightened up the inside. After the white wash dried, we hung a new curtain, sheers, laid a new rug down on the floor, and brought out a saucer chair, stand, lamp, and a vase of flowers to make it cozy. We added my daughter's easel, rubber-maid drawers, and hubby attached a counter top for a small work space. (I would still like to add a chandelier and some more comfy seating, but I am trying to make it on a shoestring budget, so I'll wait till I find what I need thrift shopping.)

We hung my daughter's paintings, drawings, and photography on the walls!

I love the outcome. Some days, when the kids are being noisy, and I need some quite time, I'll go out there and curl up in the chair, shut the door, soak up the peacefulness, and see how long it will take before someone starts yelling 'mom'!!

You can see more of my daughter's paintings, drawings, photography, and writings on her blog Written In Windsor. Her blog is brand new, so follow her on google+, and leave her a comment and let her know you stopped by!

Shaklee Trip to California 2012

This month makes 4 years since Stephen and I went on our first All-Expense-Paid Shaklee Trip! So, I thought I'd take a look back and share some highlights with you!

One of the many rewards of building our Shaklee business is the opportunity to travel… and not just travel, but travel in style.....

In May 2012 we enjoyed a trip to California (This was an earned trip that was completely paid for) and absolutely loved it! From the moment we arrived at the airport, until we arrived back home, we were treated like royalty! We had our own limo as our transportation to and from the airport!
My first time riding in a limo!
We stayed at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, which was very nice... each room had a private deck. There were walking paths, a gym, a pool, and nice courtyard with fountains and lemon and orange trees! Breakfast every morning was provided by Shaklee at the Faz-Restaurant.

Gift from Shaklee....
We toured the beautiful Shaklee Corporation World Headquarters...
Shaklee became the first company in the World to obtain Climate Neutral certification and totally offset it's CO2 emmissions. It's world headquarters building was designed using sustainable materials, including certified sustainable wood, recycled carpets, and recycled plastics.

....and enjoyed walking the red carpet, a welcome reception and photos with Shaklee's President and CEO Roger Barnett.

We had fun Shaklee meetings and made many friends!
Rick & Aldonna ~ Barb ~ Toney & Debbie ~ Pam & Drew
Joe & Heather
Mike & Carolyn
Deanna & Brad  ~  Robert & Ann
Mark & Mari from Wisconsin - their main Shaklee biz is selling Classic Basic H to farmers for crops.
We enjoyed a San Francisco Bay Dinner Cruise around Alcatraz Island and watched the sun set while cruising under the Golden Gate Bridge...

Us with new friends Agnoldo & Suzeli from New York

Did I mention all our meals were colorful and super delicious...???

We had an entire afternoon and evening that was spent at the Inglenook Winery in Napa Valley...

Vivix shots...
We also had a pleasant overnight layover in Chicago at the Hilton Rosemont Chicago O'Hare Hotel... complete with a wonderful meal!

Overall, we had a wonderful five days of luxury.... great food, beautiful sights, and spending time with amazing people!

With Shaklee, you're not just taking a trip..... you're doing it in style and loving it!

....see more of Shaklee here!
