Minimalist and Kids Toys - How Many Toys Do Kids Really Need?

Image
One thing that you always read when it comes to kids toys and minimalism is how to get rid of them or why fewer toys benefit your kids . But you never hear about how many toys are too many? I asked myself the same thing a lot through the years, and while I know minimalism is different for every one, I thought I'd let you know what works for us and how we handle our kids toys. Our two girls ages seventeen and nine, share a small room and closet . We have a set of bunk beds, and they each have their own desk, and folding chair. There are five (six cube) storage organizers in their room, along with a saucer chair, a clothes basket, and a guitar. The 17 yr old has outgrown toys obviously and now collects books!  Below is a list of every toy my nine-year-old has. We have condensed all her toys to fit in either a shoe box, a fabric cube, or a small drawer, with the exception being the barbie toys in a tub. There are 4 clear plastic shoe boxes that hold a little puppies

Dressing Your Truth - Look good - Feel Great!

Image
Dressing Your Truth is a makeover and beauty system that is about expressing and honoring your authentic nature. Dressing your truth is based on the idea that our personality, features, energy and strengths or weaknesses can all be used to categorize each of us into one of four types. Type 1: The Bright and Animated – Extroverted, ideas-person. Fun. Type 2: The Subtle and Soft – Introverted, nurturing. Blended. Type 3: The Rich and Dynamic –  Extroverted, entrepreneurial. Loud. Type 4: The Bold and Striking –  Introverted, perfection-oriented. Direct. Each type is associated with a specific energy pattern and certain traits about how they move through their world. The overall theory is that by coordinating how you dress with your energy type, you can look your very best. Each energy type is reflected in nature. Type 1: Nitrogen Think of the energy of air (upward, light). The type 1 person is bright, animated and has a gift for new ideas and possibilit

Balance

Image
“Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.”  -Thomas Merton It seems so often in life, things get out of balance. Health, finances/money, relationships, work, play, decorating, time, church, social media, electronics, etc. Most of us live a life that is far out of balance – putting the things that are not as important first, or letting them tip the scales too far in one direction. And like I tell my kids, "Too much of a good thing is not a good thing!" Everything is good in moderation and balance. The definition of what balance means to each of us is different, but there are some universal truths. For instance: each us needs a healthy work and life balance to be truly healthy and happy, and our mind, and soul must be in balance to truly be at peace, and to live a life of harmony.  "Follow the laws of Nature and you’ll never go wrong"  - Dr. Forrest C. Shaklee  Living in Harmony with Nature means bringi

Returning to Dust...

Cemetery's are soothing to my soul.... I used to work at one... but my love for cemetery's started back when I was a kid... I remember walking though a large cemetery with my cousins, that was close to my Grandma Frick's house. Cemetery's are peaceful. A place where the past, and the present, and the future, come together.  They are full of stories.... and memories  of lives people lived.... -RK We live within one mile of three cemetery's, and an old Indian burial mound.  The Adena Burial Mound dates back to 160 BC and is the largest Adena burial mound in the state of Indiana. The Swingley Cemetery, also known as Clevenger Cemetery dates back to 1799 and is just south of our house on our neighbors property. James Whicomb Riley, the famous poet's grandparents are buried here. "When I see a bird that walks like a duck and swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck." - James Whitcomb Riley

What's The True Value Of Your Home?

Image
The value of our home and land has nothing to do with what they are worth. How do you put a price tag on the memories you make? On the years of laughter you've shared, or the tears of heartbreak you've cried? Or the dreams that have come true because we chose to live here? When you add all those up.... we won the lottery to be able to call this place home! When you account for what we paid for the place, the improvements we've sunk into it, the thousands of trees and plants we've planted, the tons of stone and mulch we've hauled in... and all the other things that add up.... we are sunk. We will never get all the money back out of this place. But here's the thing.... if you love where you live.... if you truly decide to love where you live and dig in and live there.... truly live there, it doesn't matter whether you got ripped off or stole it when you bought it; the value of your home will be much more than a professional home estimate could ever

Lifesteading

Image
'Lifesteading'.... is a term I read from Rory Feeks book - Once Upon A Farm . "It is planting yourself In the soil where you live and growing a life you can be proud of. A love that will last. And a hope that even death can not shake." "We are all living somewhere between "once in a lifetime" and "happily ever after." - How very true those words are.

Clifty Falls State Park - Southern Indiana

Image
Our family enjoyed a mini getaway to Clifty Falls State Park in southern Indiana this weekend....  Clifty Falls State Park is located on 1,416 acres, just north of the Ohio River in Madison, Indiana. The park features Clifty Creek, Little Clifty Creek, and a canyon in which the sun only shines during midday. Clifty Falls State Park has ten beautiful trails that vary from easy, moderate, rugged and very rugged. Our family hiked 5 of the trails. Clifty Creek Canyon traverses the entire north-south length of the state park. The upper rim of the canyon at the north end of the park is 800 feet above sea level, descending to the valley of the Ohio River, which is 500 feet above sea level. Two other major canyons enter Clifty Creek Canyon from the east, they are Deans Branch (Tunnel Falls) and Hoffman Branch (Hoffman Falls). Clifty Falls State Park is named for the waterfalls on Clifty Creek. The falls only had a tr
