Putting Our Homeschooled Kids In Public School

I was a home schooled kid....

I never really wanted to home school my kids, but I came to love a few things about it. I loved the freedom to have our own schedule, to choose our own curriculum, to have as many field trips as we wanted.... no rushing to leave the house every morning, no stupid class parties, no bullying, no 5 days a week.....

We home schooled for over 11 yrs... and over the years I found a way to streamline our homeschooling. Our oldest daughter finished her high school online and graduated with all her credits and a diploma a year early. You can see her grad party here!

Our son is special needs and although he should be going into 6th grade this fall, he is still a first grade level... he just started reading 3 letter words. There has been a lot of testing, a long with speech, and occupational therapy. He has a difficult time retaining information, so there's alot of repeating....

Our youngest daughter.... let's just say she is often in 'La-la world', and it's hard to keep her focused. We are actually having her tested for a learning disability this year, as this will be her third year in 1st grade. She should be in 3rd grade this year.

To be honest, most days were rough. I struggled with repeating everything, over and over, I'd lose my patience and it was just a hot mess. I’m generally a happy person, but there were some days I didn’t want to get out of bed because I knew what the day was going to hold. I would think, how am I going to do school with a child who doesn’t want to work or listen, or who doesn't understand what I've been teaching year after year?

I never wanted to put my kids in public school. NEVER.

First, I was raised that to put your kids in public school is not what Christian's do.

Second, I didn't want people to think that I failed at this home school thing.

Third, I honestly think that the public school system is kinda a joke.... kids are in school more hours/days than ever recorded in history, yet they are dummer. So many schools fill their days with class parties and busy work.... and don't even get me started on standardized testing.....

Fourth, I don't like the idea that parents don't have a say about what goes on in the classroom and what kind of influence is around our kids....

Fifth, I honestly would rather my kids actually experience life, and learn at home with me....

1st day of school 2018

But here's the thing.... homeschooling wasn't working any more. It was making me become a person I wasn't proud of... it was starting to become a disservice to my kids....

So, this year, we have decided to send the kids to public school.... to give my youngest a boost in her learning, to get more special education for my son through an IEP, and to give me a break. For now, this is what's best for our family.

Who knows? I may be back to homeschooling next year, or we may stay in traditional school or try a private school.... I don't know what the future holds.

I think that sometimes we can get stuck in doing something a certain way, that we not only miss what God wants for our life, but we also make our self miserable in the meantime. I was reminded tonight that change is good, especially when your following Gods will for your life....

So, if you are still reading this, please say a prayer for my kids that they will have a smooth transition, that they will have great teachers, that they will not be influenced wrongly, that they will learn, and that my hubby and I will continue to have peace about our decision.

  1. Prayers lifted...for both the children, the educators, and you - the parents. When you begin (and you will...) to doubt your decision, come back to this post for a reminder. One step at a time. Give us THIS day, our daily bread. Many blessings to you and your family.
