The Minimalist Challenge
So, most of you know by now that I do not like clutter.... we have been on our minimalist journey for a few years now and it makes me so happy!
We have gotten rid of trailer loads and car loads full of stuff over the last few years, and although I still try to walk through the house daily to see what I can get rid of and still make monthly trips to drop off unwanted items at goodwill, it is getting harder and harder to find items that I want to get rid off. So, I thought I'd try The Minimalist Challenge.
Today is the start of a brand new month and a perfect time to try The Minimalist Challenge.
Here’s how it works…
Find a friend or family member: someone who’s willing to get rid of their excess stuff. This month, each of you must get rid of one thing on the first day. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on. Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc. Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house—and out of your life—by midnight each day.
It’s an easy game at first. However, it starts getting challenging by week two when you’re both jettisoning more than a dozen items each day. Whoever can keep it going the longest wins; you both win if you can make it all month. Bonus points if you play with more than two people.
Now, I play it just a bit different, by starting off with 31 items on day one, 30 on day 2, 29 on day three, etc. I think it's easier to find more items in the beginning...
Also, we live in the middle of nowhere, so it is not realistic for me to drive into town everyday, so I make a trash, donate, and recycle piles in the garage and the next time I go to town, I take them with me and drop them off.
One other thing I personally do: If I have something small like 5 candles, 10 pens, etc., I count the whole lot as one item - not each individually.....
Let me know in the comments if you are going to join in in the fun! You choose which way you want to play! At the end of 31 days, you will have gotten rid of 496 items!
I've already got a few drawers cleaned out and my 31 items in the donate box for today!
