How To Clean Stone And House Siding

We've lived in our home for almost thirteen years and we've never washed the stone on the outside until this year....

I'm pretty sure the people who we bought the house from never cleaned it either, although they lived here since they built it in 1975.

Anyway, the mortar around the stone was beginning to crack, and chunks were falling out in some places. The whole house looked dingy and dirty. Most of it looked like this....

Hubby had been wanting to get it off his to-do-list for awhile now, but since last summer was spent in the hospital, it got put off to this year....

He started by removing all the loose and flaking mortar.

Then he sprayed it all with water to get it wet, and Basic H2, and started scrubbing.

Basic H2 is an all natural, super concentrated, biodegradable cleaner. I have flowers and bushes planted around the house and the Basic H2 will not harm them in any way.  We try to stay away from harsh chemicals as much as we can!

He used a brush to scrub down the cement ledge and stone. And a shop broom to scrub the vinyl siding.

Green and brown dirty water ran down the house.... it was disgusting. After he finished scrubbing, he would rinse it off with the hose and start again.

He repeated this 3 times and the last time also sprayed it with Basic G. You can read all about the difference between Basic G and Bleach here and see which one you would rather use in or around your home!

Then he mixed up mortar and filled in all the cracks and holes. Our oldest daughter helped too... it was a good dad/daughter activity and gave them a chance to talk... and the best part was that I didn't have to get my hands dirty! Hehe!

I was amazed at what I saw after the stone dried..... the house looks brand new!

Look at the difference some Basic H2, Basic G, water, and a little elbow grease make!

Now that hubby cleaned, and re-mortared (I think it's called tuck and point) the stone on the house, we will seal it this fall, and hopefully it will last another forty-three years!

What a difference a little elbow grease and Shaklee can make!
