Louisville, KY Trip

Image
So my oldest daughter and I took a weekend trip to celebrate her 15th birthday (a few months late).... Note: I don't usually do big birthday celebrations . For example, last year the poor kid got a cake - nothing else! However, I thought that we could have 'mom and daughter' time - something we don't get a chance to do very often.... It started out great! I had planned for a good time in Louisville, Ky. Hair cuts, and color, eating out someplace nice, a full day and half of thrift store shopping, a great hotel complete with swimming, a hot tub, popcorn, soda, movies, painting our nails, eating birthday cake and living it up.... just her and me. Let's just say... Louisville had other ideas.....  I-65 had construction  most of the way there.... which made us delayed, but we stayed positive, singing with the radio and eating junk food! After driving for a few hours, we had very full bladders. We get to our first destination, only to discover that

How To Turn An Old Chicken Coop Into A She Shed

Image
We moved the chickens to the barn and turned an old chicken coop into a  'She Shed '. Our oldest daughter, Faith (15 yrs.) shares a small bedroom with her 6 yr. old little sister. There's not a lot of room, and with their nine year age difference, they don't have a lot in common. So, I thought we'd make a 'She Shed' for Faith to use as her own art studio... a place to get away, a place to relax, a place to breath. We took out the nest boxes, roosts, and all things chicken related, gave the whole thing a good scrub with Shaklee Basic H2 and Basic G to disinfect it , and let it dry. Then we mixed up  The Prairie Homestead's Whitewash  (we added 1 bottle of purple rite dye to tint it), and the kids and I got busy painting it on. We didn't quite have enough to do the floor, so left it original. I was planning on painting it white, but never got that done. (story of my life...)     It really brightened up the inside. After the

The Happiness Dare Giveaway

I love this book and want you to love it too, so....  I'm giving away a copy - right here on my blog...  keep reading to enter! The last couple years, I have been choosing to have more joy in my life. We have gotten rid of clutter , figured out priorities, cut back on stress in our life, and paid off our home. Life is good, but you know what??? Joy and happiness are two different things -and my life could use a lot more holy happiness in it! Get this.... God is a Happy God - and He wants us to be Happy! A. W. Tozer said that the people of God "ought to be the happiest people in all the wide world!" I think too often as Christians, we put a limit on our happiness in God.  In The Happiness Dare, Jennifer says "God gave us the created world - with sugar, bluebirds, audio books, words with friends, art museums, and sex. You have permission to enjoy food, friendships, and a cool swim on a hot summer day. the devil didn't make art, laughte

DIY Bookcase Redo

Image
It doesn't take much to give your book case a whole new makeover!  You can accomplish it with very little cost and a little bit of time. Step 1: Take everything out of the bookcase, including the shelves. Step 2: Take off the back. It is easiest if you lay the bookcase front side down on the floor.                                                     Step 3: Lay lace (you could also use material, wall paper or even paint the back a bright color.) down on the top where the back originally was. Pull snug. Step 4: Lay back on top and nail back on. Step 5: Stand upright. Place shelves back in.                                                       Step 6: Put you're books back in! Note: The key to a good looking bookcase isn't so much in the bookcase as much as it's what and how to put things in the bookcase! Group books of the same color or kind together. Have some laying down and some standing up. Add in a few collectibles (anything you l

Dressing Your Truth Experiment Fun With The Four Types

Image
I sometimes talk with people who claim that anybody can wear anything and look good. I disagree. Faith, my daughter and I decided to test that theory, by each dressing in all four types of the Dressing Your Truth Program . We used clothes, makeup, and accessories that we already had and really did try to dress as much as we could in each of the four type styles, even if we didn't like it.  We both wore the same color of makeup for each of the types. We started with Type 1: Faith had a light aqua t-shirt, white shorts, a multi colored striped belt, a bright orange zipper bracelet and gold circle earrings. (It was harder for me to find a Type 1 outfit, as I have been trying to clean out my closet since I started DYT and living with less) . My shirt had multi color circles, which I pared with a white sweater and gold circle earrings. We puffed our hair on top to give it an upward motion and we completed the look with blue eye shadow, light pink lip stain

Born For This Book Review by Chris Guillebeau

Image
To be completely honest - the first 30 pages took me awhile (like almost two weeks -yes, -that's crazy, I know!) to read..... I simply was having a hard time getting into this book. Then, in a flash - that all changed! I finished the next 279 pages in two days and have started reading it for the second time! It's another great book to add to my bookshelf ! "The conventional assumptions that we have been taught about choosing a career and how we look at things in general are often misguided and simply wrong!" Why is it that if you hold down a job for years that pays well - people think you have it made! they say you are doing well - that you have arrived. Even though, you hate that job. The job is depressing, dragging you down and slowly killing you inside.  I don't believe God ever intended us to live that way. God wants us to be fulfilled and happy. He wants us to take pride in our work, to be a good steward of the talents He gave us. And while y

Getting Rid of the Swimming Pool

Image
We said goodbye to our pool today. We had a grand party - one last hurrah - a pizza party with homemade ice cream floats! There's a few things about it that I'm gonna miss.... the beauty it brought to our backyard. the sound of the water. going for a late night swim- just hubby and I. cooling off on a hot summer day. the memories we made together as a family. and especially the reflection of the water dancing on my ceiling in the evening. We bought the pool to have something to do as a family, and to be honest - I feel guilty taking that away from the kids.... but there comes a time in life when you gotta face the facts. And the fact is too much is just that - too much! The excess of things and luxuries are not always worth it. The pool was costing us hundreds of dollars a year to run, It took time to balance, sweep and upkeep it. The supplies, toys, towels, chemicals, sweeper, hose, - all adding to extra clutter . Where we live, it is always windy, a pool cover

Cream Cheese Roll Ups

Image
Looking for a quick brunch idea for a special occasion, or maybe just a little something special to serve your family this weekend? Try these Cream Cheese Roll-ups - they are quick, easy and taste amazing with a cold glass of fresh milk! Ingredients 1 loaf of white bread 1 bar (8oz) of cream cheese  softened 3/4 - 1 cup powdered sugar ¾ cups sugar 1 TB cinnamon ½ cup butter, melted Instructions With a rolling pin, flatten bread. (I used 12 slices.)                                     In a small bowl combine cream cheese and powdered sugar until well blended. In a separate bowl combine sugar and cinnamon - set aside. Spread 1 - 1½ tablespoons of cream cheese mixture onto each flattened bread piece and roll up.                                        Dip each rolled bread into melted butter and then into the cinnamon and sugar mix. (I have found using a paper plate for the melted butter and cinnamon sugar, makes it easier and is less mess!)

What Does Family Mean to You?

Image
W ho are your family? Have you ever stopped and really thought about that question? The past few weeks, I've been giving it a lot of thought.... here's my opinion on the matter and the answer to the question! According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary , the definition of the word family is as follows: 1 - family. noun.  fam·i·ly \ˈfam-lÄ“, ˈfa-mÉ™-\  - plural. families. : a group of people who are related to each other : a person's children : a group of related people including people who lived in the past 1. : a group of individuals living under one roof and usually under one head : household 2. a : a group of persons of common ancestry : clan     b : a people or group of peoples regarded as deriving from a common stock : race 3. a : a group of people united by certain convictions or a common affiliation : fellowship     b : the staff of a high official (as the President) 4. : a group of things related by common cha
